ROSE GARDEN, BORDER OR PATIO DESIGN

Now is the perfect time of year to start planning your garden for the Spring and Summer months. English Roses are a very versatile plant that varies widely in growth, shape, fragrance, foliage and habit (i.e. repeat flowering or just once a year). This means that if you’re contemplating a rose garden, almost anything is possible.

Overgrown Garden

Many of us when buying a property in France often find the house of our dreams has been empty for years and the garden has simply been left and consequently is now overgrown. While this can be a little overwhelming with a few easy steps you can turn this around with some clear direction.

Here at Jardin de la Maison Rose we have been working with roses and designing rose gardens for private individuals and are always happy to create a rose garden, border or patio design for customers without charge. If you would appreciate any help or advice, please do get in touch.

To help us understand your requirements, please send in as much information as you can. This should include dimensions and, if possible, photographs. If you have a preferred colour scheme or are keen to incorporate certain varieties or types of roses, please include details.

This is a new service we are offering in 2019 for all our Jardin de la Maison Rose customers free of charge.

DESIGNING YOUR OWN ROSE GARDEN OR BORDER

While it can be a little challenging, designing your own rose garden, border or patio drawing up a planting scheme can be hugely rewarding and well worth the time and effort you put into it.

A rose border can be a simple rectangle or a more irregular shape, a single or double border. To draw up a planting scheme, start with an accurate, scale drawing, on squared paper, of the area. 1cm to 1m works very well.

Inspirational Ideas Board

It’s important to decide on your overall strategies, for example, the colour scheme, height of plants, mixed with perennials or purely roses, repeat flowering or not. If you need some inspiration it might be useful to make up an inspiration board and cut out your ideas from magazines/catalogue’s and pin them on to your board so you can build up a picture of what you would like to include in your rose garden or border. Another option would be to look online at different designs and plants on Pinterest.

Make a list of varieties of roses (and perennials) you would like to include, complete with colour and dimensions. Remember the dimensions quoted on the roses may vary for each variety and are usually meant to be used as a guide. Particularly with roses as they can be encouraged to grow larger or smaller by judicious pruning.

Having a Clear Direction in Place is Key

The next step is to experiment by filling in the area on the squared paper, bearing in mind the recommended spacing. Always remember it is more effective to plant in big, bold groups. Time spent planning is always rewarded in future years, so you may like to create several alternative plans before deciding on the final version.

If you would like us to cast an eye over your scheme we will be very happy to do so.

Let’s create something truly amazing together….
